Prison in west Broward closing
There's good news for people who live in west Broward: A prison there will be closing in a few months.
The state Department of Corrections said it is closing the Broward Correctional Institution on May 1.
BCI is located at 20421 Sheridan St., west of I-75.
BCI is one of seven prisons and four work camps in Florida that are being closed as a result of declining prison admissions and excess bed space.
"Declining prison admissions has led to a surplus of prison beds, allowing us to pare down our budget shortfall by consolidating and closing our older, less efficient facilities. We are committed to placing as many affected staff as possible in vacant positions for which they are qualified," said Secretary Ken Tucker.
No inmates will be released early as a result of this decision. Inmates will be relocated to institutions with vacancies that meet their custody, profile, health, education and risk assessment needs.
The BCI has a total capacity of 611 inmates.
The state has scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon in Tallahassee to talk more about the prison closures.
